Abstract
The sociopolitical development is a process of psychological growth that empowers the oppressed to transform external situations of inequity. As a theoretical proposal, it emerges from the intersection of community psychology, development psychology, liberation psychology, and Freirean pedagogy. This work introduces the concept of sociopolitical development, which is still unfamiliar in Spanishlanguage literature. It also describes its main theoretical models. Due to its similarity to the notion of empowerment, its similarities and differences are discussed. In this way, it is hoped to promote a dialogue between Latin American and American community psychology regarding topics such as political behavior, collective action, popular organization, or social mobilization, where references to oppression and liberation become central.
