Psychological well-being of Colombian mothers and non-mothers college students
Main Article Content
Abstract
Introduction: Although in Colombia the presence of mothers who pursue professional degrees is very frequent, no studies have been identified that allow comparing the psychological well-being of these populations. Objective: To contrast the psychological well-being of mothers and non-mothers in the college context, and to compare whether there are differences in the factors that make up this construct based on some sociodemographic variables characteristic of college mothers. Materials and methods: Retrospective descriptive study. A convenience sample was developed, in which 435 undergraduate students from different degrees from a public university in southern Colombia (247 mothers/188 nonmothers) participated. For the evaluation of psychological well-being, the Ryff Psychological Well-Being Scale was used, in its 29-item version. Results: There are no statistical differences in the two groups, except for the academic average and age variables. Within the group of 247 mothers, differences were identified in all dimensions of psychological well-being when compared with most of the other sociodemographic criteria investigated. Conclusion: It is necessary to periodically monitor the psychological well-being of college mothers and to establish preventive actions in order not to compromise their academic performance or their future projection as well as their children’s.
