God’s Gracious Plan: The Soteriology of the Epistle to Titus
Main Article Content
Abstract
The article examines the soteriology developed in Paul's Letter to Titus, a late New Testament writing that presents, in a brief yet mature form, the Christian mysteries as a culminating expression within Pauline theology. The analysis outlines the letter's compositional elements (its structure, purpose, literary form, and the social tensions underlying its composition) and focuses on the exegetical reading of two passages regarded as central to its theology of salvation. The study identifies a carefully structured presentation of soteriological thought, conceived as a narrative with both an origin and an ultimate fulfillment. The letter presents, as doctrine and truth, a framework comprising the following stages: God's eternal election of humanity through His benevolent love; the fullness of salvation revealed in the incarnation of Christ Jesus; the self-giving love that reveals God's goodness as never before; the regeneration and renewal of believers through the washing rite and the outpouring of the Spirit; the call to a life of piety and good works; and the future and definitive manifestation of Christ as God and Savior, who will grant the eternal life ordained from eternity. The study concludes that, by recalling this plan of salvation and emphasizing a life of piety grounded in its message, the Letter to Titus sought to establish a communal identity for a church living as a minority within a diverse and hostile culture that dehumanized people and undermined the meaning and value of human life.
