Abstract

The History of Reception has been adopted in recent years by biblical criticism as a useful and indispensable method for the exegetical task of both canonical and non-canonical texts. Based on this, the present article aims to provide the various interpretations generated by one of the favorite verses of the Church Fathers in discourses on virginity, namely, Revelation 14:4. Due to the abundance of primary sources using this text, this study has been geographically and temporally delimited to Greek authors who cited this verse during the Ante-Nicene period. Such delineations make sense because, at least within historical-traditional biblical criticism, it is assumed that analyzing the earliest readings of texts can shed light on the "original meanings" due to their proximity to the emergence of the original text. Thus, after examining the various Christian authors and their uses of Revelation 14:4, the conclusion emphasizes the importance and usefulness of “Wirkungsgeschichte” for any modern hermeneutical task related to the text in question.
