Treatment of pneumococcal infections resistant to penicillin
Main Article Content
Abstract
In the last decades Streptocoecus pneumoniae has become resistant to penicillin around theworld. Selection of adequate antibioticsfor this infection has been controversial. Penicillin is not any more the drug of choice for meningitis caused by resistant pneumococcus. Cefotaxime or ceftriaxone should be used. For multidrug resistant strains add vancomicin or rifampin to cephalosporins. For pneumonia, otitis and occult baeteremia due to resistent pneumococcus penicillin or amoxicillin at higher dosis are still recomended.
