Abstract
The loss of significant beings supposes a series of historical and sociocultural realities that harbor a host of psychological implications. Most of the works that address the subject in question have chosen to refer to the experience of loss and death, with respect to the stages of grief in general (Engel, 1964; Kubler-Ross & Kessler, 2005; Lindemann, 1944 ). However, there is little research that focuses on the experiences that human beings represent. The death of a loved one, especially a son or daughter, unexpectedly can lead to serious alterations when perceiving the changes in roles and activities that they carry out from day to day. These aspects lead to a look that tries to re-conceptualize the meaning of life and the meanings that parents construct in the event of the loss of sons and daughters. This process required a literature review that addressed both the historical-philosophical and socio-cultural bases of the loss. Likewise, the approaches that have contributed to the conception of unexpected losses in the Puerto Rican environment were analyzed. Within the intended objectives, psychotherapeutic approaches and their implications for surviving parents were also taken into consideration. In the desire of the psychological task to move in more inclusive spaces, a geographical and theoretical opening is perceived towards the understanding of the diverse realities that the subjects live. Experiences that are signified from the personal processes that have occurred. Understanding the experiences of parents who have lost their sons and daughters makes it possible to face this event with dignity and support. Certainly, this accentuates the right of every human being to re-signify his life, including the events that occur with death.
