Submission Information

Comunicación accepts two types of manuscripts related to the field of communication: research articles, which present findings derived from original research, and reflection articles, which offer scholarly reflections (including essays, chronicles, critical reviews, and other forms of academic reflection). The journal also accepts photo essays and photo series.

• Manuscripts must be submitted through the Comunicación journal's OJS platform (registration required).
• The call for submissions in Spanish and English is open year-round.
• There are no submission or article processing fees for authors.

1. Preparing Your Submission - Articles 

1.1. Title page

The title page must include:

• Article title.
• Full name(s) of the author(s).
• Academic qualifications.
• Author(s)' email address(es).
• ORCID iD (register at http://orcid.org).
• Institutional affiliation.
• Current position.
• Country.

 

1.2. Anonymous Manuscript

This document must not contain any information that identifies the author(s), as it will be submitted for double-blind peer review by two external reviewers.

The manuscript must be prepared in Microsoft Word, using letter-size paper, 3 cm margins on all sides, 1.5 line spacing, and 12-point Times New Roman font.

Length: 5,000–8,000 words (including tables, figures, references, and notes).

The manuscript must include:

• Title in Spanish and English.
• An analytical abstract in Spanish and English (maximum 300 words) describing the main idea, objectives, methodology, principal findings, and conclusions.
• At least five keywords in Spanish and English.
• Introduction: A concise presentation of the current state of the research problem, the study objectives, and a brief justification.
• Theoretical Framework: A review of the most relevant national and international literature related to the research topic, according to the scope of the study.
• Methodology: A description of the research design used for data collection and analysis. When appropriate, it should also describe the population, sample, and the rationale for its selection.
• Results: A logical presentation of the main findings, including only the tables and figures essential to the discussion.
• Discussion and Conclusions: A summary of the findings in relation to the study objectives; a discussion of the empirical evidence in light of the relevant theories and the authors' own analysis; and conclusions supported by the data. This section should also highlight the study's contributions, limitations, and potential directions for future research.
• References: A complete list of the academic sources cited in the manuscript. Preference is given to references published within the last five years and appearing in peer-reviewed journals.

Research articles must present findings derived from original research. They should clearly state the research problem, describe the methodology employed, and discuss the study's principal findings and conclusions.

Reflection articles must demonstrate a rigorous process of literature review and critical analysis on a current research topic. They must also describe the methodology used and include a review of at least 50 recent and relevant references.

The maximum number of authors is three, except in cases where a larger number of authors is duly justified.

 

1.3. Requirements for Images, Illustrations, and Tables

Tables and figures must be embedded in the Microsoft Word document at the locations where the authors wish them to appear.

Tables must be created directly in Microsoft Word so that they remain fully editable.

Tables and figures must follow the latest APA guidelines, be numbered consecutively, and include a caption identifying the source.

In addition to being embedded in the manuscript, figures must also be uploaded as supplementary files at the time of submission. They must have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi (high-quality images).

 

2. Preparing Your Submission - Photo Series or Photo Essays

Photo series and photo essays will be considered for publication provided they establish a rigorous relationship between images and text and fulfill both a narrative and an aesthetic function.

Submissions must include:

• Title in Spanish and English.
• A photo series consisting of 15 to 20 images, presented as a coherent narrative and conceptual body of work.
• An abstract in Spanish and English (maximum 150 words).
• Three to five keywords in Spanish and English.
• An introductory text that contextualizes the series, explains its conceptual, methodological, or narrative approach, and justifies its relevance.
• A photo essay text (optional). If included, it must not exceed 2,500 words and should engage explicitly with the photographic series.

 

Technical Requirements for Images

• Format: JPEG (.jpg).
• Resolution: 300 dpi.
• Recommended minimum size: 10 × 8 cm (at final reproduction size).
• Images must be uploaded as individual files rather than embedded in text documents.
• Each file must be clearly named and numbered consecutively (e.g., Image_01, Image_02, etc.).

Technical and visual quality will be a key evaluation criterion.

 

Captions and Credits

Captions and credits must be submitted in a separate file. Each caption should be clearly identified with the corresponding image number and provide relevant contextual information, avoiding redundant descriptions. Credits must identify the author of the image and, where applicable, specify any usage rights or permissions.

 

Important: Ethical Considerations and Copyright

Authors must guarantee that they hold the copyright to all submitted images or have obtained the necessary permissions for their use. When identifiable individuals appear in the photographs, authors must ensure respect for their dignity and privacy and obtain their informed consent (by submitting the duly completed consent form). The journal may request additional documentation or clarification whenever deemed necessary.

 

Editorial Review

Photo series and photo essays will be evaluated by the Editorial Committee and, where appropriate, by external peer reviewers, based on their thematic relevance, narrative coherence, conceptual rigor, and technical quality.

Plagiarism Screening 

All manuscripts are screened using Turnitin. The maximum permitted similarity index is 20% in relation to previously published works. Manuscripts will be rejected if they involve plagiarism, self-plagiarism, redundant or fragmented publication, inappropriate authorship, data manipulation, excessive self-citation, or references to sources that were not actually consulted.

 

General Review Process 

All submissions undergo a preliminary evaluation by the Editorial Committee. If approved, the manuscript is sent to two anonymous peer reviewers. If the reviewers' recommendations conflict, a third reviewer will be appointed.

The estimated time from manuscript submission to publication is six (6) months.

The journal does not require authors to cite articles previously published in Comunicación and does not publish manuscripts that present conflicts of interest or ethical concerns.

 

Citation Style 

The journal follows the most recent edition of the APA Style.

Short direct quotations (fewer than 40 words) should be incorporated into the text within quotation marks. Longer direct quotations should be presented as block quotations without quotation marks. In both cases, the author, year, and page number must be provided.

Footnotes should be used only for explanatory notes, not for bibliographic references.

 

Reference List

The reference list must appear at the end of the manuscript in alphabetical order, using hanging indentation and single spacing, in accordance with the most recent edition of the APA Style.
