Metaphors in political life. A study of the concepts of democracy and peace in the speech of Gustavo Petro Urrego
Main Article Content
Abstract
The objective of this article is to analyze the role played by metaphors in the speech of Gustavo Petro Urrego, which, as we consider, are a constitutive part of his political action. To carry out our analysis, we start from the theoretical assumptions of Lakoff and Johnson (1986), as well as the works on political metaphors by Musolff (2004; 2016). For the development of this work we selected four communication events that took place between 2013 and 2018.
From the data analysis, the different metaphors used by Gustavo Petro Urrego were specified when referring to the concepts of democracy and peace, the most recurrent terms in the corpora identified with the AntConc - Version 3.5.9 program (Anthony, 2019). The results obtained show that, from a metaphorical point of view, meanings that obey goals or objectives are ascribed to the concept of democracy. It is perceived as a symbol or as a form of poetic expression, as a living being, or as a valuable object to be preserved and fought for, and as an entity to be feared. For its part, the concept of peace is related to the meanings of achievement, purpose or desire, form of expression, symbol and communicative process.
