“We live in difficult times” was the phrase with which Friedrich Nietzsche in the 19th century and Martin Heidegger in the mid-20th century diagnosed the societies and ways of thinking of the future. It is undeniable that our time reveals a great number of crises that transcend cultures: the lack of identity among peoples, extremism and religious fanaticism, political corruption, the breakdown of daily life, the lack of values, the inhumanity of war, the disrespect for human dignity, extreme poverty, the aggression against the planet, the disregard for human rights, the lack of cohesion in thought and expression, and the absence of art as a refuge for thought. What to do about all this? Is this a terrifying and atrocious vision of what we are experiencing today? It is not a pessimistic view of the world. We are also surrounded by beauty, goodness, dignity, solidarity, respect for nature, for our fellow human beings, for family, and for God. That which makes us human, that which speaks of our humanity.
