Philosophy is defined as “the love of wisdom” because it must indeed begin with loving before seeking to know. To arrive at understanding, one must first desire it; that is to say, be astonished at not understanding, even fear not understanding (and this astonishment also provides a beginning to wisdom); or suffer from not understanding (and this fear likewise gives rise to wisdom). Philosophy understands only to the extent that it loves (Jean-Luc Marion).
