Abstract

Contemporary political philosophy has extensively theorized the operations of power, but why power requires fixed identities remains insufficiently explained. This article develops the concept of the survivor's anti-nodal-point from Elías Canetti's work to show that there exists a structural ontological incompatibility between power and metamorphosis. The survivor constitutes himself through absolute identity impermeability: he cannot transform into those whose death he survived because his identity is defined precisely by this rigid separation. Metamorphosis, in contrast, operates through the capacity to adopt multiple bodily-phenomenological configurations, temporarily inhabiting other modes of existence. This incompatibility unfolds across five dimensions: identity (rigidity versus fluidity), distance (separation versus inhabitation), accumulation (appropriation versus dissolution), vulnerability (invulnerability versus assumed fragility), and world (calculability versus openness). Through hermeneutic-phenomenological analysis of Canetti's texts and critical dialogue with Foucault and Agamben, I argue that power demands fixed identities because it is constituted from the survivor's logic, who structurally requires an anti-nodal-point: an identity configuration that no one else can adopt. Metamorphosis represents a mode of existence structurally incompatible with power, suggesting forms of political resistance that operate from identity fluidity rather than from fixed identities. The concept of anti-nodal-point contributes to contemporary political philosophy by explaining the requirement of identity fixity as a structural ontological condition of power.
