Abstract

Scholarly theater and popular traditional theater, melt in Enrique Buenaventura’s work. One of the plays in which this fusion is evident, is To the right of God. It is a dramatic piece, that is located in popular tradition with a religious hue and in the burlesque works of carnival festivities. From a point of view it
is close to religious ceremonies, but at the same time is a parody that must be read as a carnival text, marked by laughter and its deactivating power (a world that turns backwards). This article analyses the parody mechanisms, popular ingenuity and the intentions that mark the development of the plot in Enrique Buenaventura’s work.
