Abstract

46 children with group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal tonsillopharyngitis were treated; 18 with Erythromycin Stolate, 13 with Ampicillin and 15 with Cefaclor. There was no difference between the 3 antibiotics in terms of the speed of clinical cure. Before treatment, the bacteria were very sensitive to the antibiotic corresponding to each group, except for 3 who had intermediate sensitivity to ampicillin. Cefaclor eradicated Streptococcus in 100% of the patients, Erythromycin in 94.4% and Ampicillin in 76.9%. During the treatment with Ampicillin 2 strains of Streptococcus mutated from very sensitive to intermediate sensitivity and resistance. Intolerance was only observed in 2 patients who developed diarrhea with Ampicillin. The above data suggest that Ampicillin is not an indicated drug in the treatment of Streptococcal Tonsillitis.
