Abstract

A review of the Widal test (1896) and the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method invented by Kary Banks Mullis (1983) for the diagnosis of typhoid fever is made. This is done due to the validation of this method in Medellin by Sánchez and Cardona. Biographies of Widal and Mullis, as well as the clinical manifestations of typhoid fever are also described.
