Prevalence of the anxious syndrome in students of a private medical school, Medellín 2005

Abstract
Introduction. Anxious syndrome affects university students, considering college demands greater commitment from those who access it.
Objective. To evaluate the frequency and the characteristics associated to the Anxious Syndrome in students of a private medical school. Materials and methods. Descriptive study, made from a convenience sample of 183 medical students, during the second academic period of 2005. A self-reported questionnaire was performed. In order to evaluate student’s anxiety level, the Test of Zung was used.
Results. 1,2% of the students presented a severe anxiety level, 12,9% a moderate one, another 40,6% had a mild, and 45,3% a normal one. The most stressful situations reported were: tests (81.4%), family problems (45.4%), problems with the husband/ fiancè or wife/ fiancèe (35.1%) and economic problems (27.9%).
Conclusion. Anxious syndrome in students is a problem that deserves attention from the organisms in charge of the programs of university well-being.
