Colorectal Trauma. Review of the literature and analysis of a series of 16 patients managed with the primary closure and exteriorization method

Abstract
Surgical management of colorectal trauma has been reviewed. Some controversial. Themes have been discussed. Criteria for primary suture of wounds when indicated are defined. Management of this wounds in alternative cases is described. Emphasis has been made on avoiding colostomy and its importance to the patient. Sixteen patients of one of the local University Hospitals have been treated by the technique of exteriorized suture between October 1974- June 1976. Of these cases, even in prolonged evolution and severe contamination, 37.5% have been successful.
