Sexual behavior of university students in the city of Cúcuta

Abstract

Objective: To characterize the sexual behavior of adolescents and university young adults in the city of Cúcuta. Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted. 603 students from universities located in the city of Cúcuta and its metropolitan area average aged 18.9 ± 2.1 years, were included in the sample. The sample represented 58.4% women and 41.6% men, of which 89.2% were single. Results: With regard to development, the average age of torarquia was 13 and 12 years for menarche. 97% of the participants have had vaginal intercourse. The differences of gender (age of onset of sexual desires, first orgasm and first masturbation, onset of wet dreams, orgasms during sleep, first vaginal intercourse, orogenital activity) were significantly lower in the age of onset and higher prevalence in men compared to women, coinciding with previous studies. Sexual orgasm as response to masturbation was 49% (n = 206) in men and 44% (n = 95) of women, a significant decrease compared to previous studies. Conclusions: The frequency and diversity of sexual behavior found in this study reveal the necessity of implementing comprehensive sexual health education programs, introducing college level human sexuality courses and promoting a code of ethics based on the conscious and responsible exercise of the pleasurable function of sexuality.
