Abstract

Beyond the certainty of death and the visible physical changes that experienced a death body almost immediately once life processes are suspended, the death bodies kept (at least symbolically) their social role and interact with the community through communicational processed assisted by funeral rituals. In this way hundreds of ‘living people’ that pretend to contact with ‘their dead ones’ open a channel through their messages can be received and interpreted according to their own decode parameters.


Throughout this article we will discuss how symbolic communication with the dead can and should be analyzed by semiotics, allowing us to understand cemeteries (and funeral spaces in general), as scenarios that experience a series of complex communicational processes (given that at least one part is not able to have a rational answer by itself), but not because of that be meaningless.
