Abstract

Objective: To determine risk factors for severe bleeding in cases of abortion.

Methods: Case-control study, among the first October 2006 to October 31, 2007, in San Javier Intermediate Unit. We analyzed 131 medical records, 40 of 45 cases of bleeding postabortion period and 91 controls obtained at random from a list of abortion cases treated in the same period.

Results: The main triggering factor for severe bleeding post abortion is having a septic abortion OR 8.5 (95% CI 3.1-23). Other factors also contribute significantly include: conduct a poor interview, run a poor physical examination, the undervaluation of the clinical picture and delayed consultation.

Conclusions: It is necessary to detect early infection in women with abortion to begin early treatment. The fact of making a thorough examination and a detailed physical examination would prevent undercutting of the symptoms and consequences. It is important to learn from the mistakes themselves and others and make a daily feedback to decrease the frequency and negative consequences of obstetric complications.
