Depression as a result of discrimination in women living with HIV
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To study the relationship between discrimination, anger and depression in women with HIV, and test a model in which depression is an effect of discrimination mediated by anger. Method: Discrimination Scale Feared and Perceived was used for Women with HIV, the Beck Depression Inventory and the scale of anger expression Inventory Trait-State-Anger Expression were applied to a nonrandom sample of 200 Mexican women with HIV. Results: A model of double effect of discrimination on depression, direct and indirect mediated by anger management, showed good adjustment to the data. In this model, the time elapsed since diagnosis had a direct effect on depression, but not on anger. Conclusions: Discrimination predicts anger and depression. Although depressive reaction dims over time, not so with anger.
