Adolescent Experiences During the Pandemic: A Phenomenological-Hermeneutic Approach

Abstract
The spread of SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent of COVID-19, led to the implementation of public health measures such as social isolation, which in turn produced alterations in adolescent mental health. The objective of this study was to understand the perceptions and experiences of adolescents aged 15 to 19 years during pandemic-related social isolation at two higher education institutions and one secondary school in Pasto, Colombia. A qualitative design with a phenomenological-hermeneutic approach was employed. In-depth interviews were conducted with 11 adolescents selected through convenience sampling. Data analysis was performed using Atlas.ti. Results revealed that adolescents experienced a range of psychoemotional disturbances, including stress, anxiety, depression, sleep cycle disruptions, uncertainty, hopelessness, and suicidal ideation. Social isolation had a profound impact on adolescent mental health, underscoring the urgent need to develop crisis intervention strategies that promote well-being and ensure healthy lives.
