Emotions, Resistance, and Peasant Sustainability: Perceptions of Climate Change in the Páramos of Boyacá
Main Article Content
Abstract
From the perspective of environmental psychology, this study analyzes how peasant communities in the páramos of Boyacá (Colombia) navigate tensions among agricultural practices, conservation policies, and climate change. Using a qualitative interpretive approach, semi-structured interviews and participant observation were conducted with 40 peasants (60% men and 40% women). The analysis identified four dimensions: emotional and cognitive perceptions of the environment; the influence of climate on agroproductive decision-making, particularly in potato cultivation; tensions with environmental policies; and local adaptation strategies. Findings show that peasant practices integrate affective bonds, cultural meanings, and territorial relationships, shaping adaptive responses to the simultaneous pressures of climate change, conservation policies, and market dynamics. In addition, forms of resilience and resistance to institutional models emerge. Incorporating peasant knowledge, affective dimensions, and lived experiences into public policy is essential for strengthening socioecological sustainability and rural well-being in the Andes and Latin America.
