The management of antibiotics by general practitioners

Abstract

Medicament formulation is one of the most overused medical technologies, having special meaning the excessive and inadequate antibiotics usage. This situation motivated a research group to analyze this phenomenon. A transversal descriptive study was performed at the Metropolitan Area Basic Attention Centers of Antioquia, having the purpose of determining the management wich general physicians had, concerning the antibiotics usage. The information was collected in two phases: The first one was to answer a 25 question text about antibiotic therapy by general physicians, and the second one was to find a formulary for collecting the data from antibiotics prescription formulas and their respective clinical histories, which were classified in five criteria: I and II appropriate management, III and IV inappropriate management, and V insufficient records for classification. From the 128 participants physicians, 94.5% had are inappropriate management (14 or less right answers). From the 216 formulas reviewed, 60.7% were considered to have an inappropriate management, a 31% in criteria I and ll and the remaining 8.3% corresponded to criteriunl "V. When Appling student's T in both findings a statistically meaning difference with p < 0.001 was formed. When analyzing the phenomenon, the conclusion was. Nowadays it exists an inadequate antibiotic formulation in the Basic Attention Centers. This situation generates antimicrobial agents resistant stump and excessive monetary costs to institutions, therefore, an adequate social and medical responsibility must be stimulated and propitiate that makes the antibiotic usage a most rigorous practice.
