Abstract

A group of 164patlents were endoscopied by upper gastrointestinal symptoms In the Clinical Leon XIII Medellin Colombia; two antral biopsies were obtained from each patient to bestained with Heamatoxilin – Eosin and modified Giemsa; for histopathologic diagnosis and microbiologic detection respectively. Campylobacter pyIori was present in 67% of the patients. Seventeen patents were normal (9 of these were positive for the spiral bacteria); the other had some gastric or duodenal pathology, with predominance of gastritis (68.3%)and duodenitis (26.2%), In those cases Campylobacter was found In 67.8%and 81.3%respectlvely; It was observed In duodenitis a statistical significant association. In the histopathology, 15patlents (9.2%) were normal and the others had gastritis (90.8%). In 72%of the patents with duodenal ulcer and histologic gastritis, Campylobacter pylori was obtained: this results and findings from other studies suggest that C. pylori Is causally associated with chronic gastritis that accompain duodenal ulcer. Campylobacter pylori is established as one of the factors Implicated in the pathogeny of the chronic gastritis.
