Abstract

During the period August 1984 to August 1989, 1549 dermatomycosis patients were diagnosed at the CIB Mycology Laboratory. From this population, 162 (10.5%) patients presented infections due to more than one etiologic agent (mixed etiology). Most of these patients (70%) were adults and males (54.3%). The most frequently observed association was the one of a dermatophyte with yeast (39.7%); T. rubrum was the agent most commonly observed in association with species of Candida (26.5%) as well as with different fungi (40%). The dermatophyte-yeast association was predominantly recovered from tinea pedis (40%) while that of Candida and other fungus was observed mostly in nail Infections. These data Indicate that various fungi may play a role In the genesis of the same lesion.
