Abstract

From a group of 4.099 woman older than fifteen, in the municipalities of Puerto Nare (Antioquia) and Puerto Serviez (Boyacá), and 89.089 in Abriaquí, Amalfi, Andes, Arboletes, El Bagre, Caucasia, Frontino, Ituango, Necoclí, Puerto Berrío and Urrao (Arrtioquia] , a sample of 1.171 and 4.450 women was taken out respectivelv, in july and october 1983, in order to determine the prevalence of cervix carcinoma and its relation ship to some risk factors. A vaginal cytology test was realized to all those women, and a person, time and place questionnaire, were taken to all of them. A biopsy was made to 12 of the 20 women from Puerto Nare and Puerto Serviez who showed degrees III and IV of cytology, to certify the diagnosis, finding that 37.5% degree III and 100% degree IV, were positive, for a prevalence of 6 x 1000. 66 women from the 11 municipalities, showed degree III and IV of cytology. A biopsy was made to seven women who showed degree IV, finding that 100% were positive to cervix carcinoma. The greatest cervix cancer proportion was seen in the group of the oldest women, with the most time of sexual life and with family cancer antecedents. Vaginal infection and inflammatory smear, didn't influence in suspicion or positivity of cervix carcinoma. Moreover, an investigative-educational cancer fight program was held in the eleven municipalities. Eight of them have a cytology program already and they reach an annual scope of 8.31%. In our sample of citologies we covered a population ten times greater than total reached by all the municipalities in one month. It was found that in the municipalities with the best suited educative program (Amalfi, Andes, Caucasia and Urrao), there were more second-time citologies. However, more than one half were first-time citologies. The educational program was realized by means of conferences and movies reaching an assistance, in the 13 municipalities, of approximately 22.000 people, not counting the radial broadcasting scope. Medicancer and the civil air patrol (P.A.C.) have been taking charge of giving the appropriate treatment to those patients with cancer diagnosis.
