Historical aspects of cleft lip and palate

Abstract

The author reviews the development of surgical techniques to repair cleft lips and palates. Although both of them were known since ancient times, they are studied separately since palate repairs were held back for many centuries because physicians believed that they were always the direct result of syphilitic infections.
