The case of infectious. Urinary Candidiasis. Review of 25 cases

Abstract

The results of 63 urine samples sent to the Mycology Laboratory of the Corporacion para Investigaciones Biologicas (CIB), between January 1987 and October 1992, for fungal studies were reviewed. A diagnosis of urinary candidiasis was established in 25 of the cases. Analyses of the corresponding data revealed that woman and persons older than 60 were more frequently afflicted, with 17 cases (68%) and 14 cases (56%), respectively. The underlying conditions for urinary tract candidiasis were the presence of previous surgical procedures In 14 cases (56%), diabetes mellitus In 9 cases (36%), use of wide spectrum antibiotics In 24 cases (96%) and the presence of urinary catheter In 23 cases (92%). The Candida species most frequently Isolates was C. albicans in 18 cases (72%).
