Clinical and epidemiologic characteristics in a population of patients with diagnosis of inflammatory bowl disease. Medellin-Colombia

Abstract
Objective: describe the clinical and epidemiologic characteristics in a population of patients with known diagnosis of inflammatory bowl disease (IBD) in the city of Medellín, and compare these results with those reported in the world literature.
Methods: a descriptive, retrospective case series research was performed where patients with confirmed ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn´s disease (CD), confirmed by biopsy or endoscopically, were included.
Results: a total of 115 patients with IBD were collected, 92 with ulcerative colitis (UC) and 23 with Crohn’s disease (CD). The average age was 47 (15 to 82). 62% (71) were women. The colonoscopy extent in patients with UC was as follows: pancolitis 47%, left side colitis 23%, proctosigmoiditis 21% and proctitis 9%. For CD the extension was: distal ileum and right side colitis 28%, ileocolitis 28% pancolitis 22% proctosigmoiditis 22%. The clinical manifestations more frequently found in UC was: rectal bleeding 93%, diarrhea 87%, passage of mucus 56.5%, abdominal pain 65%, weight loss 50.5%, fever 23.5%. These same clinical manifestations were found in CD with the following percentage: rectal bleeding 56%, diarrhea 83%, passage of mucus 56.5%, abdominal pain 83%, weight loss 69.5%, fever 41%. The most common extra intestinal manifestation as for UC and CD were peripheral arthritis with 25% and 36% respectively.
Conclusion: this description of 115 patients with IBD becomes an important step for characterization of the disease in Colombia. Although the outcomes were similar to those in the literature, there are important differences described that’s worth prospective research to factors that make different the clinical manifestations or pathogenesis of the disease in our country.
