Quality of life in patients with hyperhidrosis after thoracoscopic sympathectomy in the Clínica Cardiovascular Santa Maria in Medellin, Colombia.

Abstract

Introduction: thoracoscopic sympathectomy is indicated as treatment for hyperhidrosis. The objective was to evaluate hyperhidrosis patients’ perception of their quality of life before and after the thoracoscopic sympathectomy.


Methods: patients with hyperhidrosis who had received a thoracoscopic sympathectomy were interviewed via telephone. During the interview the SF-36 instrument was used in order to evaluate quality of life before and after the procedure.


Results: a total of 33 patients were studied, of which 66.6% were of female gender. Mean age was 26.5 years. Most compromised body areas were hand palms (90.9%), armpits (72.7%), feet palms (39.4%), face (24.2%) and inguinal region (3.0%). The most frequent adverse effect was compensatory sweating (60.6%), with the back being the most compromised part of the body. Upon evaluation the quality of life questionnaire, a clear improvement was noticed, specially on the variables of social functioning (69.1%), physical performance (59.7%) and emotional performance (34.5%).


Conclusion: thoracoscopic sympathectomy is a safe and effective procedure which improved patients’ quality of life.
