Abstract

Suicide is a significant cause of mortality among young people, underscoring the importance of understanding its risk factors for effective prevention. This study examined factors associated with suicidal ideation among 213 dentistry students using a cross-sectional approach. Sociodemographic data were collected, and scales measuring suicidal risk, hopelessness, family functionality, and drug abuse were applied. Descriptive analyses and Chi-square tests (p < .05) were conducted to assess the association between suicidal ideation and various factors. The participants had an average age of 21 years (SD: 2.46), with 67.1% being women. Suicidal ideation was prevalent in 25.4% of the sample (95% CI: 16.2–31.0), occurring more frequently among women, students with high levels of hopelessness, and those experiencing family dysfunction. No significant association was found between suicidal ideation and drug abuse. The primary associated factors were gender, hopelessness, and family dysfunction, emphasizing the need for targeted educational strategies to prevent suicide among high-risk students.
