Abstract

Parental stress might a negative influence on parenting, in turn affecting adolescent development. There are several instruments to assess family stress, but few of them are specifically designed for Spanish-speaking parents. The objective of this study was to show evidence of the factorial validity and reliability of a scale of perceived stressors in parents of adolescents in a Mexican population. A total of 407 parents of school adolescents aged 12 to 18 years (71.1% female; 28.9% male) participated. Exploratory and confirmatory analyses were carried out to evaluate its factorial structure, respectively. The principal component analysis yielded seven factors (α2 = 62.18%; α = .920); the confirmatory analysis showed a model with an acceptable fit (RMSEA = .054; CFI = .924; TLI = .915). This version may potentially be useful for assessing sources of stressors and stress intensity in parents of adolescents.
