Abstract

Cognitive manifestations of anxiety related to exams refer to heightened levels of worry, thoughts which are not related to the task, difficulties in thinking clearly and mental blackouts suffered by students in examination situations. These anxiety symptoms tend to be frequent in college freshmen because they are exposed to new academic and social demands. Taking this into consideration, the present article examines the impact of a training program in study and academic self-control social skills on cognitive manifestations of anxiety for college freshmen. Through an experimental design, it was observed that freshmen who participated in the program (N = 31) had lower levels of anxiety than participants in the controlled group (N = 31). And besides observing significant differences ((t = 3.12, gl =60, p < .01) there is also a large effect size (d = . 54) Overall, these results suggest that the designed program is a posible effective strategy to lower levels of cognitive manifestations of anxiety in the population of University freshmen.
