An open route to explore biotechnology

Abstract

Many of the products that we know or consume on a daily basis are made thanks to living beings that we cannot easily see, but that coexist among us: microorganisms. These tiny beings—like bacteria, fungi, or microalgae—allow us to turn an initial substance into a finished product, through a process known as biotransformation. That, in simple terms, is biotechnology.

In our daily life, for example, we find different biotechnological developments, such as the production of yogurt, wastewater treatment, winemaking, pest control in crops, and the production of vaccines, among others.
