The Role of Attitudes Toward Masturbation and Sexual Practices in the Sexual Guilt of Adolescent Males
Main Article Content
Abstract
Despite being common, adolescent masturbation involves negative emotional burdens. This study assessed sexual guilt and attitudes toward masturbation in adolescent males based on their sexual practices, determining whether these variables predict guilt. Through a cross-sectional predictive study with 303 Colombian adolescents aged fourteen to eighteen, predominantly heterosexual (90.1%), it was identified that 90.4% practiced masturbation weekly or monthly. The use of pornography and the exchange of sexual content through digital means (sexting) were also frequent. Using regression analysis, it was determined that sexual guilt is predicted by the combined effect of negative emotions toward masturbation and sexual experience. The emotional burden associated with masturbation suggests a lack of acceptance of one’s own sexuality. The need to promote effective education programs that encourage positive attitudes toward sexuality and critical thinking in the choice of sexual practices is emphasized.
