Social awareness, semiotic representation, and drawing in children’s experience: theoretical and methodological trends

This article presents a literature review that aimed to identify theoretical and methodological trends in studies on the relationship between social awareness, semiotic representation, and drawing in children’s experience. Ninety-five articles published between 2005 and 2020 were reviewed from a critical perspective regarding the object, the subjects, and research approaches. It was identified that theories of social representation, stereotypes, and possible worlds are the most common ones, and that participatory action research, experimental studies, and clinical and therapeutic studies are the most implemented methodologies. Drawing has not been approached from an interdisciplinary perspective of cognitive sciences, nor sufficiently from a phenomenological approach. Therefore, studying social awareness in children requires an approach rooted in the phenomenology of the social world and semiotic analysis.
