Abstract

José Saramago’s narrative is a recent focus of analysis for those who pretend to study Contemporary Literature. Through The Cave, the writer exposes endless situations which should be thought deeply. In the following paper such situations are studied from the perspective of Cultural Studies. Among others, the use of popular language, the dialectic between the rural and the urban, the social exclusion and consumerism are highlighted. Therefore, this is a critical analysis of The Cave by José Saramago that is based on the interdisciplinary works by other authors. The contribution of Cultural Studies and José Saramago’s criticism are close to the concern about being, because the last one is trapped by the dynamics that society imposes.
