Church and state in the political conformation of new grenade

Abstract

The historical, political, religious and social antecedents of the first half of XIX century in New Granada, are framed by a substantial aspect of the relations between Church and State: the struggle for the political power. From the beginnings of the republic, Church and State struggled for political, social and educative control, which was characterized by the ideological imposition of conservative and liberal tendencies. The first tendency refering to the chruch as the regent of the spiritual and material world, and the second one, registered by the government, guarantor of the power of the State and guardian of the rights and liberties of its citizens. From the historical and hermeneutique method, this article attempts to analyze the different contexts where the politics of New Grenade develops in this period of the history of Colombia.
