Focus and Scope

Comunicación is a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the Faculty of Social Communication and Journalism, part of the School of Social Sciences at the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana (Medellín, Colombia). The journal is published twice a year under a continuous publication model. Its aim is to disseminate original, high-quality scholarly research through the publication of research and reflection articles that contribute to the understanding of communication phenomena from interdisciplinary perspectives. Its scope encompasses research on communication, journalism, the social sciences, the humanities, and related fields that advance critical analysis and academic debate at the local, national, and international levels.

Comunicación is an open-access journal that provides immediate and free access to all its content. It is published and funded by the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana, does not charge submission, article processing, or publication fees (APCs), and does not carry advertising.

Frequency

Comunicación publishes articles under a continuous publication model and organizes its content into two issues per year (January–June and July–December). Each continuous publication period closes on June 30 and December 31, respectively. The journal accepts manuscript submissions throughout the year and publishes accepted articles on a rolling basis, provided they fall within the thematic scope defined in its Focus and Scope.

Funding Model

Comunicación is fully funded by the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana. It does not charge article processing charges (APCs) or any fees for submission, peer review, or publication.

Time for evaluation

The estimated time for the peer review process is six (6) months from the date the manuscript is received. Once a manuscript has been accepted for publication, the estimated time for editing and publication is two (2) months, provided that the authors have addressed the revisions requested by the peer reviewers and the Editorial Team has completed its final verification.

Peer Review Process

The journal subjects all submitted manuscripts to a preliminary editorial assessment conducted by the Editorial Committee to verify their thematic relevance, originality, scholarly quality, and compliance with the Author Guidelines. At this stage, manuscripts are also screened using the Turnitin® similarity detection software. The resulting report is reviewed by the Editorial Team, and, when necessary, authors are asked to make the appropriate revisions before the manuscript proceeds to peer review.

Manuscripts that pass the preliminary assessment and qualify as research articles are sent to two external peer reviewers under a double-blind review process, in which the identities of both authors and reviewers remain anonymous throughout the evaluation. At least 80% of the journal's peer reviewers are affiliated with institutions other than the publishing institution.

The reviewers provide an academic evaluation that serves as the basis for the editorial decision. If the reviewers' recommendations conflict (one favorable and one unfavorable), the Editorial Committee will appoint a third external reviewer to support the final decision.

Book reviews, editorials, and other contributions that do not qualify as scholarly articles may follow a different editorial review process, depending on their nature and the criteria established by the Editorial Committee.

At the conclusion of the evaluation process, the editorial decision may be one of the following:

Accepted for publication.
Accepted subject to the incorporation of the revisions requested by the peer reviewers and the Editorial Team.
Rejected.

All manuscripts are evaluated based on their scholarly quality, originality, methodological rigor, and thematic relevance, in accordance with the ethical principles adopted by the journal.

Open Access Policy

Comunicación is published under an open-access model to promote the visibility, accessibility, and dissemination of scholarly research. All content is freely and immediately available to readers, with no access restrictions.

Published articles are distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0) license, which permits users to share the material provided that appropriate credit is given to the original publication, it is not used for commercial purposes, and no derivative works are created, in accordance with the terms of the license.

The Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana, as the publishing institution, covers all costs associated with the editorial process.
