Resumo
Este artigo destina-se a delinear o contexto histórico-social da época vitoriana e de alguns dos seus autores. Aqui, as questões relacionadas com a sexualidade, as suas leis e proibições serão exaustivamente explicadas e analisadas.
Em contraste com o progresso tecnológico que a sociedade britânica conheceu durante o século XIX, a era vitoriana caracterizou-se por um puritanismo exagerado, uma tremenda repressão sexual e a subvalorização das mulheres, que se tornaram responsáveis por todos os males sociais. A moralidade acima mencionada foi duramente criticada por alguns dos seus contemporâneos, como os escritores Oscar Wilde e Bernard Shaw, que reflectiram a mediocridade e estreiteza de visão da sociedade vitoriana nas suas obras notáveis e bastante conhecidas. As principais características do período vitoriano são então representadas pelo despertar de uma nova consciência social, em que as classes médias se tornam cada vez mais exigentes do que na era romântica.
