Abstract

The history of the Panama State construction can be comprehended from two view- points. The first is connected to national myths of anti-imperialist militancy, and the second refers to the weakness shown by the Colombian government of the time and its incapacity to control the entire territory. Both viewpoints can be complemented by the analysis of construction processes of the states in light of the changes in the inter- national system. This paper aims to lay the foundations for a reinterpretation of the historical construction of public institutions in Panama; this process was a result of the frequent intents of the domestic elite to reach legitimacy in the international context, taking into account a scenario of de facto autonomy regarding the Colombian State.
